The City Council of Vera has approved in plenary session the request to the Andalusian Government for the emblematic procession of the Ascent of Jesus and the Proclamation of the Jew, which takes place every Good Friday morning, to be recognized as an Intangible Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) of Andalusia.
The petition, promoted by the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, is based on the great historical, social and ethnographic value of this Veratense tradition, considered one of the most unique manifestations of Holy Week in the province.
The Ascent of Jesus is characterized by the exclusive accompaniment of men. All the men of Veratense families gather at the Glorieta early in the morning to make a solemn journey from the hermitage of San Ramón to the Plaza Mayor, where the emotional encounter with the Virgen de las Angustias takes place. In addition to the parish priest’s sermon, the Pregón del Judío, a chant passed down from generation to generation, is the last vestige of the old “Holy Week functions” that were performed in the town until the Civil War.
With this initiative, Vera seeks to protect and disseminate a unique tradition that is an essential part of its cultural identity and that could be a decisive step towards the declaration of the Holy Week of Vera as a Festival of National Tourist Interest.
