BROTHERHOODS AND FRATERNITIES
The history of the Veratense Holy Week was born after the Christian conquest. Some of the brotherhoods that procession at the present time have their origin in the XVII century. It begins the weekend before Palm Sunday, with the transfers of the images of Our Father Jesus of Nazarene and the Holy Virgin of the Anguishes from their respective Hermitages to the Parish Temple, to be present at the Official Proclamation of Holy Week and, to begin the liturgical activities that are celebrated during this week in the temple.
On Friday of Sorrows, the Virgin and the Son, say goodbye until the reunion in the Sentencia, on Good Friday. The Mother accompanies the Son to his Temple to then return to the house of the Patroness of Vera.

The Holy Week in Vera is lived with emotion and fervor.
The time of Lent in our city already announces with its transfers and Stations of the Cross the emotion that neighbors and visitors will share during these days in which the various brotherhoods and fraternities take to the streets their sacred images, keeping alive a heritage that has endured over the centuries, and that will continue to be a fundamental pillar of our collective identity.

On Palm Sunday, the Borriquita walks through the streets of Vera by the hand of the San Cleofás Group. This day, of joyful tradition, marks the beginning of Holy Week, commemorating the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, where he was received with palm and olive branches by the crowd.
Recollection and prayer are imposed on Easter Monday with the solemn parish Way of the Cross, which recalls the path of Jesus to Calvary. The faithful illuminate the night with their candles and prayers, stopping at each of the fourteen stations, which symbolize an episode of the Passion of Christ.
Holy Tuesday is the day of the city’s brotherhood quarry, the day of our children and young people who make up the Children and Youth Brotherhood of Our Lady of Forgiveness. A unique brotherhood that already accumulates more than 30 years of history of brotherly feeling.
Holy Wednesday has become one of the great days of Holy Week in Vera thanks to the fervor of the gypsy people. The Mayordomía de San Antón leaves us images of racial beauty with its Jesus Cautivo and its Virgen de la Pureza.
The Holy Offices (Lord’s Supper) precede the expected departure from La Plata Street of the procession of the Royal and Venerable Brotherhood of St. John the Evangelist, Holy Christ of Mercy and Mary Most Holy of Grace and Hope on Holy Thursday of Vera.
Good Friday is a day lived with special intensity by the Veratenses. The day begins with the ascent of Jesus at 8 am, an event that brings together several generations of men from local families in the hermitage of San Ramon to accompany the image of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth on his way to Calvary. This emotional act is followed by the Proclamation of the Jew and the procession of the Royal Archconfraternity of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth. The day ends with silence and recollection: the solemn procession of the Holy Burial, in charge of the Illustrious and Venerable Brotherhood of Our Lady, the Most Holy Virgin of Anguish, goes through the streets of Vera.
The processions of our impressive Holy Week conclude on Easter Sunday with the transfer of the Resurrected Christ from the hermitage of San Ramón to the hermitage of the patron saint. Mass is celebrated there, followed by the subsequent procession. The traditional auction in front of San Ramón ends a week of fervor and passion.
If you have chosen Vera as a destination to enjoy these days of rest, we invite you to immerse yourself in a unique experience. The Holy Week of Vera is feeling, union and love towards our traditions.
