The Holy Week of Vera continues to be a meeting point between religious tradition, history and values shared by the community and the Spanish military corps. In a ceremony full of symbolism and emotion held in the Hermitage of San Ramon, the General of the Brigade “King Alfonso XIII” II of La Legion, Jose Agustin Carreras Postigo, has given his baton of command to the image of Our Father Jesus Nazarene, head of the Royal Archconfraternity of Vera, in a gesture that represents the surrender of the military authority before the faith and popular devotion.
This event, developed in a personal capacity by General Carreras Postigo, was attended by civil, ecclesiastical and military authorities and representatives of brotherhoods linked to the Legion from Levante Almeriense and the region of Murcia, as well as the Mayor of Vera, Alfonso Garcia.
The handing over of the baton of command, a historical symbol of responsibility and leadership in the military field, at the feet of the Nazarene has a deep spiritual and communal meaning: it recognizes faith as a “personal and professional guide” and underlines the humility with which the military institution expresses its link with the religious tradition of Verata.
This event is part of a relationship of more than 30 years between the Royal Archconfraternity of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno and the Brigade of La Legion, a collaboration that goes beyond the presence in processions. The historic Brotherhood and the Legion have shared cultural, charitable and commemorative initiatives on different dates, such as the first Jura de Bandera for civilians held in Vera in 2025 or the inauguration of the Monument to the Spanish Legion in the Parque de La Glorieta, next to the Ermita de San Ramón.
As a token of appreciation for his commitment, the Royal Archconfraternity has named General Carreras Postigo Honorary Brother, thus reinforcing a bond that endures in the collective memory of Vera. The baton of command will remain permanently next to the image of the Nazarene during future processions, symbolizing this historical alliance between the military and the divine.
This gesture, that unites tradition, history and faith, constitutes one more milestone in the spiritual and festive patrimony of the Holy Week of Vera and reinforces the singularity of its celebrations within the Andalusian brotherhood framework.
