Vera celebrates the Centenary of the Canonical Coronation of the Virgen de las Angustias with an emblematic program

The municipality of Vera lives a historic year on the occasion of the Centenary of the Canonical Coronation of the Virgen de las Angustias, Patron, Perpetual Mayor and symbol of deep devotion to the city. The commemoration of this milestone, which marks a century since the Virgin received this honor on July 11, 1926, has already begun with an intense program of religious, cultural and social events that will continue through 2026.

The official presentation of the Centenary Poster, held in the historic Convent of La Victoria, marked the beginning of the commemorative activities. The event was attended by the Mayor of Vera, provincial institutional representatives and members of the Very Ancient, Illustrious, Venerable and Patronal Brotherhood of Our Lady the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows, accompanied by the faithful and members of the brotherhood.

The pictorial work selected as the central image of the Centenary, made in oil on board, reflects with great expressiveness the figure of the Virgin of Sorrows, deeply rooted in the religious and cultural identity of Vera. This piece will become the visual emblem of all the celebrations and promotional materials throughout the year.

Commemorative program: pillars and activities

The Brotherhood, in collaboration with the City Council and local institutions, has structured the Centennial program around four fundamental pillars:

  • Christian formation, with meetings and activities aimed at deepening faith and spirituality.
  • Pastoral and worship program, which will enrich the religious life of the community.
  • Cultural and informative activities, aimed at disseminating the history of devotion to the Virgin of Anguish.
  • Evangelizing social work, with initiatives aimed at promoting inclusion and accompanying children and families in particular.

These axes respond to the spirit of the event: to honor the memory of a historical event, to reinforce community values and to generate a positive impact on the social and religious life of Vera.

Institutional support and historical legacy

The mayor of Vera has stressed the importance of this celebration for the whole city, recalling the significance of the first canonical coronation in the diocese of Almeria and the role of the Virgen de las Angustias as a spiritual rock for generations of Veratenses. Also, representatives of the Junta de Andalucía and the Provincial Council have expressed their support for the commemorative events, highlighting the identity and cultural value of this commemoration for the province.

The complete program of the Centenary, which will include special worship services, conferences, exhibitions, musical events and activities open to the public, will be disseminated soon through the official website of the Holy Week of Vera and the institutional channels of the City Council.
