Very Ancient, Illustrious, Venerable and Patronal Brotherhood of Our Lady the Most Holy Virgin of Anguish

It was founded in Vera on April 22, 1680. Throughout these 345 years of history this Brotherhood has lived great events, it is worth mentioning the proclamation of the Stma. Virgen de las Angustias as Patroness of Vera in 1888, the diocesan coronation of the Stma. Virgen in 1926, thus being the first Marian image crowned throughout the province of Almería and her appointment in 2013 as Honorary and Perpetual Mayoress of Vera receiving this same year the gold medal of the city. Of unknown author, it was carved in boxwood in the late seventeenth century. It makes its penitential station on Good Friday night (Holy Burial) along with the steps of the Holy Sepulchre and the Holy Christ of Column.

Moment of special feeling

7:30 a.m.: transfer of Our Lady of Sorrows from her hermitage to the parish church of the Incarnation, to accompany her son in the Jewish Proclamation after the traditional Ascent of Jesus.

10 a.m.: Processional transfer of the Stma. Virgen de las Angustias from the parish church of the Encarnación to her hermitage.

Itinerary: Ermita de la Virgen de las Angustias – c/Virgen de las Angustias – c/ Mayor – plaza Mayor – iglesia de la Encarnación.

Curiosities

The front chapel of the paso de palio of the Blessed Virgin is a replica of the scene of the annunciation that you can contemplate in the attic of the main altarpiece of the parish church of Our Lady of the Incarnation of Vera. On both sides of the central chapel you can appreciate the images of Mother Paula, founder of the order of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, and San Vicente de Paul, as founder of the order of the Sisters of Charity, both congregations present in our town. The symbolism of these three images represents the three theological virtues: faith (Mother Paula), hope (the Incarnation) and charity (St. Vincent de Paul).
